This was a good weekend for paddle racing. Saturday was the PNWORCA Distance OC6 Championships hosted by the Lummi Indian club Autumn Rose. It was supposed to be a 17 mile loop, but due to high winds and rough seas was shortened to two short laps and 14 miles. Our club (Bellingham Bay Outrigger Paddlers) did very well. I paddled in the mens open boat and we ended up second. Our women's boat easily won their race and our mixed boat did very well even though they took on so much water that one person had to bale almost the whole time.
Yesterday was the Board the Fjord race in Deep Cove, North Vancouver. It was a 8.5 mile course and around 35 people started the race. I was the only person with an unlimited board, so I was a bit lonely off the front wondering if I was on the correct course. Kimo from Lynden was a strong second and won the 14' class. Dale was 3rd in the 14's. Mike Hammer won the 12'6" division after doing the Bellingham Traverse solo the day before! That's hard core! Whatcom County represented!
If you ever get a chance to paddle in Deep Cove, do it! It's gorgeous. Paddling heaven. Big thanks to Mike Darbyshire for putting on the race!
